Dice, Camera, Action: Healing Kiss

A mermaid, and a flustered Evelyn!

Dice, Camera, Action: "Death"

The Waffle Crew met Death last evening. An old and faceless thing. I kept thinking, "Death from the Endless would be pissed if she got stuck with this form during her mortal sabbatical...."

For once, I was really satisfied with a sketch of Death and Dream!

Critical Role - Season 2: Fjord's Falchion

My take on what Fjord's falchion looked like an episode or two back, after the Wrathful Smite:

This is what happens when your patron may be a Kraken!

Dice, Camera, Action: "Gutter"

My take on the sword "Gutter" from the WotC Dice, Camera, Action stream.

Warm-up Sketch: The Dice Camera Action Ritual

Chris Perkins and the Dice Camera Action "Waffle Crew" have been killing it on their Twitch D&D game every Tuesday night. In a recent session, the party had life or death choices for three of the four party members involving a ritual with a costume and a shady ally dressed in an ominous ritualistic outfit.

Warm-up Sketch: Duke Zalto's Hammer

In the D&D 5E adventure, Storm King's Thunder, the evil Fire Giant lord, Duke Zalto, brandishes a unique great maul. The head of the weapon is hollowed out to include a prison for medium or smaller creatures.

You can get a partial glimpse of the maul in the adventure art, which led me to curiously sketching the following:

Warm-up Sketch; Waffles vs. Stairs!

Once more, a sketch inspired by the WotC Dice Camera Action Twitch stream - another super fast ink-over-pencil sketch of Waffles the baby Owlbear.  This time with her friends, Stinky and Juniper!

I made a mad rush to finish this while the stream was still on - which is still not a good reason to use thick pens for thin whiskers! For me, the fun of doing it more than made up for the bits and pieces that are odd, or just a bit off.

Warm-up Sketch: Waffles, the Baby Owlbear

Another sketch inspired by the WotC Dice Camera Action Twitch stream - a super fast ink-over-pencil sketch of Waffles the baby Owlbear.  Groooooo!

Quickly done or not, was that there is much potential for going VERY cute with the owl eyes (you can make the eyes huge, puppy dog-esque things, round out the head, etc.).  I had that in mind when I started, but I accidentally ended up steering away from that when I did the rest of the sketch.

Warm-up Sketch Series: Wolverine

My last posted sketch turned into three sequential All-New Wolverine (X-23 for those that don't realize Logan has been dead in comics since 2014) warm-up sketches.  We had Laura go from the Monkey Style flip into two Changquan inspired stances.  As I said a few days ago, she has the real potential for some amazing combat panels.  The toe claws could add a whole new visual layer to many Capoeira and Changquan moves.

These are all pencil sketches into ink (a weird combo of different pens/brushes).  Lettering and level adjustment done in Photoshop after the scan.  I probably should have redone the middle panel; you can see the levels adjustment is poorly done.

Here are the individual scanned sketches from the final two panels:

Warm-up Sketch: Wolverine Somersault

I rarely draw my favorite character, Wolverine (Laura Kinney/X-23), because I never quite seem to do her correctly.

My motivation to try again yesterday: I am always interested to see more sequential action panels with her, since she has a wealth of possibilities to draw from.  A vast and diverse skill set + flexibility + acrobatics are a recipe for some excellent visuals.

Warm-up Sketch: Grung Wildling

The Grung appear on pp. 156-157 of the great Volo's Guide for D&D 5E, and I am somewhat desperate to use them in a campaign at some point!  No idea why he is posing like Hulk Hogan however...

"Whatcha gonna do when a Grung goes Wildling on you!?"

Warm-up Sketch: Captain Marvel

There is something about Ruby Rose that makes me think she is the perfect reference for in-comic book Captain Marvel's face.  It has to be the short hair and sharp features.

This ended up somewhere between Carol Danvers and Ruby Rose, but that's OK too.

Force Grey: The Lost Episode's New Title!?

After watching the WotC D&D stream for their live "Force Grey: The Lost Episode" (DM'd by Critical Role's Matt Mercer), it became clear that there was one true PC hero.  A giant among mortals.  A harden bulwark set against the forces of evil.  In short, a baby porcupine.

Context: Dylan Sprouse was one of the new guests for the game (playing a Druid), and he managed to sneak in a way to both turn his character into a baby porcupine AND make it useful.  Truly the stuff of legends...or at least D&D bragging rights for some time to come.
